UNHAPPY EVENING
CV Z PA ’Reuter —Copyright) MELBOURNE. May 21 Judy Garland, in Melbourne, today told 30 reporters at her hotel room to “Go away.”
Through a narrow crack in the door, the 42-year-old actress added: “I think you stink.”
Efforts to interview Miss Garland came after the sudden walk-out ending her show at the Festival Hall in Melbourne last evening, when 7000 persons paid £12,000 to hear her sing. The walk-out ended a most unhappy evening for Miss Garland, who arrived 65 minutes late for the show, tripped going on to the stage, was slow-handclapped and sang in a voice which critics described as “harsh and raspy.”
Occasionally she fluffed a note as a steady stream of people walked out of the hall. The promotor, Harry Miller, said: “I’m speechless. What can I say? It is out of my hands. The money (for the concert) was paid to Miss Garland at 12 o’clock on the day of her performance.” Mr Miller added: “I’ll •never, never bring her to Australia again.”
