SUBMARINE DETECTION
Co-operation By N.Z. Navy GV.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 22. Reports fron New Zealand warships will soon be fed into a Pacific network of underwater information designed to improve the chances of detecting submarines. The Minister of Defence (Mr Eyre) said today that accurate knowledge of the sea, its temperatures, currents and other data was essential to modern anti-sub-marine techniques. The United States Navy operated an anti-submarine weapons environmental prediction system in Guam which received reports from ships and issued forecasts based on these of conditions in the Pacific. The Royal Australian Navy had already agreed to contribute to this network and arrangements had now been made for New Zealand to cooperate.
New Zealand warships would send oceanographic reports direct to Guam and the Royal New Zealand Navy would receive in return the U.S.N.’s regular forecasts.
