TRADE WITH B. COLUMBIA
Freight Rates Are Barrier (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) VICTORIA (British Columbia), May 21. High freight rates posed a major barrier to increased trade between Australia and New Zealand and British Columbia, a State Government report said today, Canadian Press reported. A market survey prepared by the Trade and Industry Department said another barrier lay in the sluggishness of British Columbia businessmen, who missed trading possibilities. They should be able to sell more raw materials and “sophisticated electronic equipment” to Australia and engineering equipment, heavy machinery, lumber, chemicals, aluminium, copper and rugs to New Zealand.
Freight rates were “very high” to Australia and “unjustifiably high” to New Zealand. “Every effort should be made to negotiate lower special rates for volume traffic.” the report said. “Everything possible should also be done to increase shipping frequency on these runs.”
