Unemployment Lists
Sir, —Could the Labour Department tell me when their unemployment lists will be cleared as the weather is getting very cold for men who have been sick to stand round, on Monday for at least 30 minutes outside the Social Security Office? They also need privacy instead of waiting outside in full view of the girls in the Drainage Board office before being paraded in front of a public counter by Social Security officers. Unless jobs are available they should be able to send their forms in by mail, and so save a cold wait and. bus fares.—Yours, etc..
DISILLUSIONED NATIONALIST. May 17, 1964. [The district superintendent of the Department of Labour (Mr C. P. Collins) replies: “The employment figures in Christchurch were lower at the end of April than for the similar time in the previous two years. In spite of the expected seasonal surge of unemployment the number registered for work with the department at May 15 was less than at the end of April. It is unlikely that the departmental register of unemployed will be down to zero during the winter months, as, apart from temporary seasonal unemployment, .we have some men and women whose physical handicaps make them very difficult to employ.”]
