Ravelston Likely To Start In Steeples

DUNEDIN, May 21. Ravelston, a dual acceptor at the Waimate Racing Club’s meeting, is likely to start 1 in I the Studholme Hack Steeples lin preference to the Waihao Hack Hurdles. He will be ridden by the stable horseman, R. O. Cairns, who will now be free to ride Sudd El Nil in the hurdle race. His trainer, H. A. Anderton. said that with Ravelston starting in the steeplechase it was unlikely that his other candidate. Promise would make the trip to Waimate and that he would be reserved for a later meeting. Ridden by Cairns, Ravelston and his stable-mate, Tara Hill (M. Parr), gave a fast clean display of jumping over six of the trial steeplechase fences at Wingatui yesterday. . Sudd El Nil (R. O. Cairns) accompanied Jolly Fox (M. Parr) over two flights of hurdles at a fgst pace. Jolly Fox carried on to jump two more fences, while Sudd El Nil worked over a round of the course and impressed by his fast finishing effort. He is very Well at present and a form runner for his. Waimate engagement. Radiant Howe (R. O. Cairns), in his first test as a jumper in company, did well in a school with the experienced Milord (J. D. Pankhurst) over four - flights of hurdles. Milord has done well since running third at his last start at Invercargill and he is another form runner who will add considerable interest to the Waihao Hurdles. Etonne (D. Adams) and Mighty Smart (P. J. Denton) gave a good display over the same fences. These two members of A. N. Didham’s team are improving with every

school and should be ready to make their debuts as jumpers at the Dunedin meeting next week. Mighty Fella (B. P. Kennedy) and Grand Monarch (J. D. Pankhurst) gave a good fast display over six of the brush fences, and Black Peter (P. J. Denton) and Drum Major (R. O. Cairns) came through a similar task in fine style. Sound Trial Kumai rounded off his Waimate Cup preparation with another sound trial at Wingat’ui yesterday. Two other members of H. A. Andertpn’s team, Blue Haven and Lucky Streak, recorded smart sprint efforts. The trials were held on the outside of the course proper. The track was cutting out slightly and was against fast times. Overhead conditions were good after a sharp frost. Ridden by his race rider, B; J. Anderton, Kumai shaded For Sure (R. J. Skelton) and Great Howe (R. N. Marsh), clear of Corduroy (A. I. Powell) and Toby Twilight (P. Silver), at the end of a solid round.

Kumai ran the last five furlongs in Imin llsec, the final three furlongs in 43sec. ■

Golden Blossom (J. R. Dowling) was not. extended to run five furlongs in Imin lOsec, the last three furlongs in 43sec. A form runner in the President’s. Handicap, the second leg of the Waimate double, Golden Blossom is raced by Mr J. M. Samson, who is at present in hospital. Glenmorven (E. J. Didham) and Highland Fair (C. Jones) were together in Imin llsec after taking 28sec for the first two furlongs.
