Exciting Day For Jubilee Home
The happy, homely atmosphere of Jubilee Home was commented on by Lady Fergusson to the matron (Miss J. Potter) yesterday morning. Her excellency spent nearly an hour with the elderly patients and residents and had a chat to most of them.
There are 46 patients and 42 residents in the home. “They will have something to talk about for a long time,” said Miss Potter.
Her Excellency was met by the chairman of the North. Canterbury Hospital Board (Dr. L. C. L. Averill) who presented the matrOn-in-chief of the board (Mrs M. Chambers), the medical superin-tendent-in-chief (Dr. L. McH. Berry), and the matron of the home (Miss Potter) and members of the North Canterbury Hospital Board. Miss Potter, the assistant matron (Mrs H. Brough) and the chairman of the committee of the board of control of Jubilee Home (Miss B. Webb) escorted Lady Fergusson round the home.
With a cheerful smile and a wave of the hand, Lady Fergusson said: “Goodbye, goodbye,” as she left each room. “You are looking the brightest of the lot,” Lady. Fergusson told the oldest woman in the home, Mrs A. Fuller, who is 94. “You can teach all these chickens quite’ a lot, can’t you?” she said smiling at the rest of the women.
Mrs M. Brown, who is 84,
showed Lady Fergusson how she was making a bathmat from strips of multi-coloured materials. Lady Fergusson talked to the women about the places they had lived and thejr travels. Many of them had come from Britain. At morning tea with the residents of the home. Lady Fergusson was presented with a basket of flowers by Mrs R. Wilson, who is 92. Mrs Wil-
son said she was very pleased to give the flowers to her Excellency. Lady Fergusson held the basket in the air and said to the elderly women there: “Have you seen it? Isn't it lovely?” After morning tea, Lady Fergusson signed the visitors' book and went to look at the chapel.
