Sweater Has A Story
Though factories boom In Southern Ireland there Is still an Important place for cottage industries, where world • renowned wearing, knitting and other handicrafts are produced.
Miss Ruth Kingston, a teacher from County Waterford, is keeping herself warm in Canterbury this winter in a handknitted bulky sweater of native - Irish unscoured wool that is almost waterproof.
Each part of the traditional pattern has a meaning. Cable stitch represents the tangled path of life, the blackberry stitch is a symbol of Irish mountains and bold criss-cross lines signify fishing nets.
