Fewer Teams In Rose Bowl
A Freyberg Rose Bowl competition with the number of teams reduced from 12 to eight and the length of the tournament increased from three days to four was advocated by the vice-captain of the 1964 Canterbury team (I. S. Harvey) at the annual dinner of the Canterbury Provincial Golf Association.
The present field of 72, playing in twos, was too large, contended Harvey. One or two teams were not strong enough to hold their own. Harvey said he did not know whether or not the Canterbury association could do anything about seeking a change. But he felt if it had the chance it should take it.
He suggested that elimination matches could be held in both islands to weed out the weak sides. The eight strongest sides could then go on to the Freyberg proper. Harvey asserted that the present system of having an arranged draw was not altogether fair. “Eight teams playing each other over four days would be a much fairer test,” he said.
