Closing Of Streets

Sir, —Two of the proposals adopted by the Christchurch City Council last night appear very ill-advised. The closing of Tuam street at its west end is just incredible. At present Tuam street ranks a Close second to Oxford terrace as a Western outlet. To divert all its traffic to an already overcrowded Oxford terrace wquld.be chaotic. No reason whatever was given in favour of this extraordinary idea. The other proposal, to close the western block of Cambridge terrace, is a minor one by comparison. On its own merits it appears quite .indefensible. It means that north-bound traffic at present divided between Montreal street and Rolleston avenue will in future take the former. Yet Montreal street with its very frequent intersections, is far less suitable for through traffic than Rolleston avenue.— Yours NO SENSE. May 21, 1964.
