SHOPPERS’ BUS

Board Scheme “Nullified”

By altering an Armagh street stopping place for the proposed shoppers’ bus service, the City Council had nullified the Transport Board’s scheme, said Cr. H. E. Denton to the council meeting last evening. The council, on the recommendation of a sub-commit-tee consisting of Cr. T. D. Flint, chairman of the traffic committee, Cr. H. G. Hay, and the Traffic Superintendent (Mr J. F. Thomas) approved a stop on the north side of Armagh street immediately west of the Colombo street intersection, along with other stops which had been sought by the board. Cr. Denton said the board had wanted the stop on the east side of Colombo street, where there was a busy shopping area. “Now the board may as well get rid of the scheme straight away,’* he said. His speech was studded with points of order after he had said the the stop proposed by the council was outside a councillor’s business premises; and the Mayor (Mr G. Manning) told Cr. Denton to refrain from discussing personalities.

Instead of using a busy place now occupied by a taxi stand the proposal was to move it to a less busy place in Victoria square, said Cr. H. P. Smith.

Cr. Hay gave notice that he would take no part in the voting.
