ISLANDERS’ PROBLEM

Choice Of Union (N.Z. Press Association) APIA, May 11. The most burning problem for the people of the Tokelau Islands is whether to link with the Cook, Islands or Samoa. On his visit, the GovernorGeneral (Sir Bernard Fergusson) told the islanders they would not be hurried, but that the sooner they made up their minds the sooner they would become used to the new system. At Fakaofo the welcoming speaker said the New Zealand Government had asked them which way they wanted to go, and they were disappointed because they did not know exactly ■ which direction they should follow. “But we have confidence that the New Zealand Government will continue to help and assist us, and we are still linked under the protection of the British Commonwealth of Nations,” he said.

An open mind is all very well in its way, but it ought not to be so open that there is no keeping anything in or out of it.—Samuel Butler.
