Moving Old Houses
Sir, —Many have been puzzled by the regulations applying to the shifting of old houses on to other sections. 1 was under the impression that an age limit was a condition before the council would consent tosuch a transfer and to my own knowledge a house in Ferry road was refused the right of transfer to another section because of this regulation. What prompts the inquiry is the transfer of an old house to South Brighton. This house is, to say the least, very dilapidated, full of borer and an eyesore to the whole of this locality. New Brighton has been the repository of many old shacks and this' has given, it a poor name, as well as depreciating the value of wellbuilt dwellings. It is time a halt was called to making New Brighton a slum area.— Yours, etc., SOUTH SHORE. May 1, 1964.
[The City Engineer (Mr P. G. Scoular) ‘ replies:—“The moving of old houses is a matter of individual consideration and cases are treated on their merits. Houses are inspected and, usually, quite stringent conditions laid down as to redecoration, borer treatment, etc.”]
