28 Years At Kaiapoi One of the fir« woman crossing-keepers in New Zealand died in Christchurch las', week She was Mrs Jane Teresa Johnston. aged 92, who was crossing-keeper a’. Kaiapoi for 38 years. Every day from 1911 to 1939 when lights were first installed at the main crossing, she was on duty from 7 a_m to 9 ptn. In all the years she was there she never had one accident on her crossing, though (here were times when people almost disobeyed her. said her daughter. Mrs C Hoare. yesterday. Parents relied on Mrs Johnston to see their children across safely, and she was always ready to ecnte out any hour of the night to see a traveller across the lines. Mrs Johnston worked for the sick and needy in Kaiapoi. giving assistance and visiting. With her husband. Mr Henry Johnston, she was responsible for the establishment of the Kaiapoi Convent and Convent School, buying a section and raising money. When she left Kaiapoi she was presented with an armchair for her services to the • community. Mrs Johnston is survived by her husband, daughter, son. grand-daughter and greatgrandson.
