Impounded
The bathtub, m.v. Hohepa, was impounded by the Wellington Harbour Board yesterday afternoon as it set off across Wellington harbour from the ferry wharf to York Bay, where it was to pick up the escort launch which was to accompany it across Uook Strait. The chairman of the Canterbury University Students’ Association’s stunts committee (Mr G. J. Pateman) said last evening that the vessel had been confiscated on the ground that it was a danger to shipping. The m.v. Hohepa consists of a bathtub with two oil drums as outriggers, and is powered by an outboard motor. Conditions were almost ideal when the vessel set out yesterday. Those on board were Barry Pickering, Richard Wright, and Neil Smith. The m.v. Hohepa was taken to Wellington on the inter-island steamer on Saturday night It was intended to sail it from Wellington to Port Underwood, and it was to be taken from there to Christchurch by truck.
