Nasser’s Legacy Clear
(Special Crspdt. NZPA.) LONDON, April 29. President Nasser had now shown the kind of Government and political society he wished to bequeath to Egypt, says the “Daily Telegraph’s” Cairo correspondent The new National Assembly and the provisional constitution reflected important aspects of the country’s internal situation, the foremost being that the President now had the support of
more than 90 per cent of the people. “Despite all its limitations, the National Assembly bestows an unprecedented sense of dignity and participation upon the fellaheen and workers, whose representatives comprise a majority of the members,” the ccrrespondent says. “These groups, of course, are already beneficiaries under the revolutionary regime. Social welfare schemes and improved educational facilities are beginning to make their mark.
“The Egyptian intelligentsia, and the. cultural and entertainment worlds, have
never had it so good, provided they conform politically; The Army is the national darling.” The correspondent says that for the regime now apparently firmly established, there were two foreseeable possible disruptive factors.’ “One is dissension within the Army itself as the rising generation of young officers, who did not experience the realities of the Palestine defeat, become impatient with their elders’ caution in the face of Israeli miliUry ability. The other is the everpresent possibility of an involvement in an unsuccessful conflict with' Israel.”
