HAUTAPU OFF BEACH; TOW TO WELLINGTON
(New Zealand Press Association)
BLENHEIM, April 29.
The trawler Hautapu, which has been stranded on the beach near Ward since last November, is on her way to Wellington. After unsuccessful earlier attempts to tow her off, the Hautapu was refloated shortly before 8 o’clock this morning. The vessel was pulled off by the Tory Channel Whaling Company’s mother ship, Tuatea, which had also made the earlier attempts. The Tuatea eased the Hautapu in her stranded position by pulling the vessel from side to side last night. The attempt to refloat her was started today at 6.55 a.m., and an hour later the Hautapu floated free. By 9.30 she was out of the bay and on her way to Wellington. Late yesterday afternoon
she was moved some distance from the beach, and this morning after a lengthy haul she came free and was towed into deeper water. The Tuatea is keeping close to the coast with shelter in Port Underwood and Tory Channel offering. Captain A. G. Baggett is in charge of the Tuatea, and Captain A. F. Watchlin and Captain W- R. Fell are on board the Hautapu with the salvage crew.
