Last Cycling Club Begins On Roads

The’Christchurch Amateur Cycling Club held its first race of the season on Saturday so that all three amateur clubs, have now begun road racing. Longer Race The Papanui club, the first to open, has begun to extend its races and on Saturday held a 30-mile handicap event, won by A. Trotter off 15 minutes. Trotter has been away from cycling for two seasons. B. Thorpe and D. Lees, who rode as novices in the track season, are now in ppen com ; pany and did well for second and ' third. Both started from 12 minutes. A good field of 25 faced the starter. On the outward run the 15 and 12 minute riders gradually gained on the limit man, F. Johnson. Just after the turn, Trotter was in the lead on his own but he was soon picked up by Tnorpe and Lees. These three remained together until about two miles from the finish when Trotter and Thorpe drew away from Lees. In the sprint, Trotter did the better to win by six lengths. Results:— A. Trotter (15mln), 1:36.42, I; B. Thorpe (12min), 1:33.42.5, 2; D. Lees (12min), 1:33.53, 3; P. Walford (Umin), 1:24.2, 4. Fastest Time.—J, Danielson (scr), 1:23.2. Teamed Well D. Cumberpatch, who has shown great improvement in his riding over the last season, teamed well with his co-marker. N. Clarke, off 10 minutes to maintain the lead throughout the 20 miles for the V.B. trophy. On the return journey. M Litolff gradually gained on the leaders but could not overhaul them. In the final sprint Cumberpatch drew away from Clarke to win narrowly. F. Tabak, riding off scratch, held on to take fastest time from his co-marker, N. Stuart, by a narrow margin. A good race was seen over six miles by novice riders. Three thre’e-mlnute markers teamed well to bold together to the finish. R. Smith gaining, the decision over W. Harewood and S' Hudson. Results:— D. Cumberpatch (lOmin), 52:44, 1; N. Clarke (lOmin). 52:44.5,’ 2; M. Litolff (61'min). 52:44, 3; J. ' Ineson (lOmin). 56 57. 4: P. Frisken (Simin), 54:12, 5. Fastest Time:—T. Tabak (scr). 49:24. Novices:—R. Smith (3min), 17:3, 1: W. Harewood (3min), 17:3.5, 2; S. Hudson 43min), 17:4, 3. Fastest Time:—G. Wood ftcr), 1S:28.

Won First Race For the first race of the season the Christchurch club hbld a. 20-mile A and B grade scratch race. Honours must go to the winner of the B grade event, W James,-who was having his first race. He showed that he has ability and in the closing stages of the race rode away from the more seasoned riders to win by half a minute. Riders in the A grade event remained well bunched ovpr the whole distance and in the final sprint D. Gutry, just shaded A. Leppens for first place with C. Fitzgerald close up for third. Results:— A Grade:—D. Gutry 1. A. Leppens 2„ C. Fitzgerald 3. Time, 50:45. B Grade.—W. Janus 1, N. Worsfold 2, S. Smith 3. Time, 51:0.
