Jack Nicklaus, the pretournament favourite, who trailed by nine strokes after the first round, shot a second straight 66 today to tie Mike Souchak for the 54-hole lead in the 50,000 dollar Houston golf classic. As the second round leaders faltered, Nitklaus posted a 76, 66, 66—208 and Souchak, the 1959 classic champiqn, collected rounds of 71, 69, and 68 to move into tomorrow’s final round five under par for the 7233-yard par 35-36—71 Sharpstown Country Club course.

Nicklaus had begun the third round at even par, two strokes behind Souchak and three behind the first place tie of Don January, Billy Maxwell, Buster Cupit and Ramon Sota of Spain. •Nicklaus fashioned his second 66 with a 34-32 that included six birdies and only one. bogie. Souchak built his 34-34 with six birdies and three bogies. R. J. Charles, the lefthanded defending champion from New Zealand, was two under par through 15 holes but went one aver on the fifteenth and took a five on the short, par-three seventeenth finishing the day at 72 for a 214 total, Reuter reported.
