Policeman Rescues Sixth Climber From Sugarloaf

CVew Zealand Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH, April 19. In clear moonlight this evening, Constable R. V. Petrowski climbed two-thirds of the way up New Plymouth’s 540 ft Paritutu Sugarloaf to bring down his sixth trapped climber in two years and a half.

Constable Petrowski received the British Empire Medal in this year’s New Yea. honours for his pas* rescues.

This time it was Allan John Turner, aged 22, second electrician on the Hobart Star, which is berthed at New Plymouth, whom he rescued. He was between 250 and

300 feet up the rock on the seaward side when he found himself trapped about 3 p.m., after climbing down from the top. He attracted the attention of two fishermen on a rock below, but they could not leave the rock until the tide receded. Constable Petrowski was told at 6.45 p.m.

The constable began his climb in darkness, but with a moon shining on the seaward side of the Sugarloaf, at 7 p.m. He reached Mr Turner, who was throwing lighted matches to show his position, about 8 p.m. after a fast ascent. The downward climb took a little longer.
