“AS FIT AS A FIDDLE”

Auckland Man Is 101 (N.Z. Press Association» AUCKLAND, April 19. The oldest resident of Auckland, Mr W. Reid, has entered his one hundred and fifth year “as fit as a fiddle." He celebrated his birthday on Saturday with a quiet family gathering at Rangimarie Hospital. A cake was presented to him by the Old People's Welfare Committee, and the Northern Military District Artillery Band, of which he is the oldest former member, played his favourite selections in the hospital grounds. The many greetings received by Mr Reid included messages from the Administrator (Sir Harold Barrowclough), the Acting-Prime Minister (Mr Hanan) and the Ulster Association.

Mr Reid was wearing the lapei badge of the Old Colonists’ Association, of which he is the only surviving member. In his younger days Mr Reid was a champion rifle shot. He was also a keen motorist, and drove over the Auckland harbour bridge in his hundredth year.
