Spirited play and aggressive tactics on both sides in the closing minutes of this game at Denton Oval provided a small crowd of supporters with spectacular Rugby. In the final 10 minutes of the match 21 points were scored, 15 of them from tries Shirley was toath .to accept defeat, and finished on a high note when, the right wing, J. Rudd, scored the final try. The standard set in the match ranged from mediocre to spectacular.. Ih the first half, there was nothing to excite even the most biased supporter, although the lead changed twice and was even on one other occasion. Shirley led at half-time, 11-8. In the game’s last 20 minutes both scored freely from a wide assortment of opportunist moves and at the whistle, Lincoln College was still on top, but not by such a margin as the. score would suggest. Lincoln College's taller, heavier pack was the deciding factor of the match. It was able to give good service from line-outs-and individually, the tall forwards showed ability to run and pass the ball amongst themselves. The Shirley forwards, led by W. Flaveli and M. Dyer, were particularly vigorous but ap. peared to tire slightly towards the finish. W. Stevens and A. Banks proved very valuable to Lincoln College. As locks they carried out their tasks admirably and Banks’s accurate kicking added 11 points to the total. The Lincoln College backs appeared considerably slower than their opposite numbers However, they were very safe on defence. F. Fowler, the Shirley five-eighths, was undoubtedly the outstanding back on the field. He was quick off the mark, showed a good eye for the gap and figured prom-' inently in several good scoring moves. The referee was Mr A, F. Gurnsey.
