“Murdered” By Vandals
This girl had her throat cut on New Year’s Eve or near that time. She was found after the holidays lying in a pond with a gaping wound in her neck and both ankles snapped.
Made of copper sheeting by
John Panting, a Christchurch sculptor now living in England, the girl stood bn a little platform over a pool outside the "Mercantile Gazette’s” modern office building m Madras street. Apart from some early, harmless attentions from university students, she remained safe and unmolested for about 18 months. Then the vandals struck. She was found battered and
broken, with concertina bends where she had no concertina bends before, according to Mr T. J. Taylor, lecturer in sculpture at the School of Fine Arts at Ham.
One of his stage 3 students, Mr Colin Strange, is shown making repairs with an acetylene torch.
“But she won't be as good as before,” Mr Taylor warned.
