14 TRUANTS FOUND

New Officer’s Work

Since the Canterbury Education Board’s attendance officer began work on March 9, 14 cases of irregular attendance had been reported to the board, the secretary-manager (Mr W. P. Spencer) told the board in his report yesterday. “After investigation, 10 have been dealt with successfully and are unlikely to recur. Some improvement can be expected with the other four, but they are the type requiring constant attention," he said. “In view of the agitation, particularly from post-pri-mary schools, that led to the appointment of an attendance officer, it is surprising that only five secondary and two primary schools have referred cases for investigation. 1 doubt whether the position regarding truancy is as satisfactory as it appears, and 1 will be circularising schools reminding them of their obligation to report to the board.”
