5 Share Masters First Round Lead

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright)

AUGUSTA (Georgia), April 9. Kel Nagle, of Australia, shot a three under par 69 to go into a five-way tie for the first round lead in the Masters golf tournament, United Press International reported. Nagle’s fine 36-33 round was matched by the South African, Gary Player, and three Americans, Arnold Palmer, Bob Goalby and a dark-horse, Charles Love, of Charlotte, North Carolina. Love dropped a 25ft putt on the last hole to enter the bunched group of top professionals. R. J. Charles, of New Zealand, had a 71 and Bruce Devlin, of Canberra, a 72. Charles carded birdies on

No. 6 and No. 13. He had a chance to tie for the lead coming up to No. 18, but had to settle for a bogey. Inflamed Throat

Player, choking back the pain of an inflamed throat, played a nearly flawless round in halves of 35 and 34. Palmer, a three-time Masters champion but without a win on the professional tour this year, birdied three of the four par-five holes to post a 35-34. Nagle, 46 years old and only in the United States for nine days, picked up all his margin on a back-nine run of 33. Ninety-six players teed off, including the defending champion, Jack Nicklaus, who scored 36, 35—71.
