Thunderhead For Avondale Stakes

"The Press" Special Service AUCKLAND,

April 10. Whether Thunderhead, under 9.0, will again be able to aecount for Markable x and Clipjoint is one of the interesting questions set by the Avondale Jockey Club’s autumn meeting tomorrow. Thunderhead will be meeting the other two in the £l5OO Sapling Stakes. Last week, on much more favourable terms, he beat them in the £4lOO Wills Stakes at Ellerslie. Thunderhead has the maximum weight set by the conditions of the Sapling Stakes. Markable has 8.3 and Clipjoint 8.8. Thunderhead has 131 b more than he carried in the Wills Stakes. Clipjoint is up 51b, and Markable is up 31b from last weekend. Markable finished third in the Wills Stakes, half a length behind Starlit (second), and Clipjoint was a length away fourth. The honours were all with Thunderhead, but Markable ran very creditably as well from a hopeless early position, This time Markable will be meeting Thunderhead on 101 b better terms and that is a pretty big advantage. He is a black colt trained at Avondale by D. J. Burgess for Messrs R. W. Cavaney and G. Vuglar and one of the local two-year-olds which looks most likely to be really good in his second season. Clipjoint has lately shown signs of coming back to the good form she showed in the Spring. As well as her good effort in the Wills Stakes she came third in the Great Northern Champagne Stakes. CAPACITY FIELD The Sapling Stakes is one of the last races for two-year-olds and not unexpectedly the acceptors far exceeded the safety number. In order to keep the field down to the limit four horses were balloted out with right of reentry and five were put out altogether. Last year, so as to accommodate the acceptors the event was run in two divisions. Big attraction besides the Sapling Stakes will be the £l5OO Foley Memorial Handicap, Mt Eden Handicap, and Mt. Roskill Handicap. The Foley Memorial and the Mt. Eden Handicap will make up the T.A.B. double. The change to easier ground with the showery weather of yesterday brightened the prospect of Gold Chick and Fair Filou in the Foley Memorial and it has given Mali Peter the look of a very good chance indeed in the Mt. Eden Handicap. If there is further rain and the going becomes softer, Mantovani and Elkayel will become other likely prospects fo. the Foley Memorial. Gay Cobbler, which ran so well for fourth in the Caltex Mile and eighth in the Easter Handicap at the Auckland Autumn meeting, Clarendon, Supreme Gold, Senior, and Yardstick are among the many chances for the Mt. Roskill Handicap, an open mile worth £lOOO. Selections:—
