Funny Story May Win First Leg In Awapuni Double
“The Press” Special Service
WELLINGTON, April 10. Funny Story and Star of Kildare are chosen for the T.A.B. double at Awapuni tomorrow. In the feature races Roodyvoo and Trial Offer have excellent chances.
Roodyvoo and Trial Offer are in the Awapuni Gold Cup and the Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes. Their riders, V. R. Coley and G. F. Hughes, will be trying for repeat wins —Hughes in both races and Coley in the cup. Hughes has already won the Produce Stakes three times, on a preparation restricted by ing in 1958, and the fillies Royal Applause in 1954 and Blyton in 1962. He rides a filly again in Trial Offer, and her form suggests that she will be the hardest to beat.
Roodyvoo contests the cup on a preparation restricted by uncertainty about how much use his old injury will stand. So far the sesamoid fracture he received more than 12 months ago has had enough strength to withstand everything asked of it in eight races. Fortunately, Roodyvoo is not a gross horse, which makes conditioning him on a limited galloping programme a little less difficult. Hughes has had one success in the Awapuni Gold Cup, on Mainbrace in 1951. Funny Story has won two races this season, both over seven furlongs. She has not won at a mile, but her chances of doing so in the Tamatete Handicap look encouraging. Her trip to the
Auckland Easter meeting was fruitless, but before that she had been beaten only a head by Star of Kildare at Opunake and a long neck by Gay Filou in a mile at Trentham. Since Star of Kildare beat Funny Story at Opunake he has won again at Stratford and twice run second at Tauherenikau. He has plenty of pace, which will stand to him in the Longburn Handicap. The on-course double is on the Karere High-weight and the Woodhey Hack Handicap. The track is in good order.
