“DOMINION” TAKE-OVER
Last Offer Withdrawn (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, April 10. The total withdrawal of the take-over offer made by New Zealand Newspapers, Ltd., for the Wellington Publishing Company, Ltd., publishers of the “Dominion,” was announced today. Mr E. H. Rhodes, chairman of directors of New Zealand Newspapers, Ltd., in making the announcement, said that in giving notice of its bid, the company had said this would be withdrawn if all other offers were withdrawn. Earlier this week the Thomson Organisation of London had announced the total withdrawal of its offer. Mr Rhodes said the Thomson Organisation’s offer had been withdrawn because its attempt to gain control of the “Dominion” had failed, and this was a source of satisfaction to those who believed that control of New Zealand newspapers should not be gained by overseas companies. It was true that minority shareholding in the Wellington Publishing Company had been gained by News, Ltd., of Adelaide, but there was on record a statement by the directors that an agreement it had reached with the Australian company meant that “effective control of the company will remain in New Zealand hands.”
