NEW YORK, April 10.
The United Nations Security Council has deplored the R.A.F. attack on a Yemeni fort last month, and condemned the principle of reprisals.
Sir Patrick Dean, of Britain, said that in view of the “positive features” of the resolution, which also called
on both sides to do their utmost to avoid further incidents and asked U Thant to use his good offices to settle outstanding issues, he was abstaining in last night’s vote on it The United States also abstained, with Mr Adlai Stevenson saying that the resolution was not “responsive to the realities and facts.” The resolution was therefore passed by nine votes to nil. The resolution, as adopted, deplored all attacks and incidents in the Yemeni border struggle and said it was “deeply concerned” at the “serious situation” in the area. British Defence Sir Patrick Dean said Britain did not believe the Yemeni complaint of “aggression” was justified and said the Harib raid was “wholly defensive in order to prevent further attacks." Britain did not regard the raid as a reprisal, but as “necessary and unavoidable if the territorial integrity of the South Arabian Federation was to be protected.” He promised Britain would continue to work for “peace and stability” in the area.
Polaris For Pacific—The Secretary of the Navy (Mr Paul Nitze) said today that the United States hoped to place Polaris submarines in the Pacific Fleet about the end of 1964.—Washington, April 9.
