Airport Development
Sir, —I read with interest your front-page report on airport development work, with particular reference to a contract awarded for clearing and levelling 80 acres of land. Would you enlighten me on the following points? (1) Who awards contracts for the development work at Harewood? (2) What was the value of this particular contract? (3) Why was this contract awarded to a firm of demolition contractors who, if correctly reported in the columns of your newspaper, have publicly expressed their incapability of completing the required work within the contract period because they lack the requisite plant, to the extent of £50,000? Yours, etc., J. K. HENDERSON. April 3, 1964. [Councillor A. R. Guthrey, chairman of the airport committee of the Christchurch City Council, replies: “1. Contracts are awarded by the Christchurch City Council either on its own behalf or on behalf of itself and the C.A.A. depending upon the financial responsibility for the work. 2. The value of this contract is £10,859 3. The contract was awarded to a firm which has had substantial experience in earthworks at the airport and elsewhere.”]
