UMPIRES SLATED
Too Kind To Visitors “There has been a marked tendency among New Zealand umpires to be kind to visiting teams at the expense of the home players.” said the New Zealand cricket captain. John Reid, at the Canterbury Cricket Association prize-giving last evening. He made broad criticism of the umpiring in the recent test series against South Africa and added: T'm all for hospitality, but perhaps it was taken a little far by our umpires on this tour. “There was a certain amount of discontent among the players of both sides with the umpiring during the series—one or two were very good, but the others were not so good. “The score for disputed decisions and l.b.w. decisions after the test at Dunedin stood at 11-2 in favour of the South Africans. That is a ratio which is so unequal as to be questionable, to say the least. “We should take a leaf from the book of the Australians and appoint the country’s two top umpires for the whole series. The appointment of umpires for a test merely because they live in the area of the match is not good enough.”
