Vaccination Of All By Jet Gun
(N.Z.P. A.-Reuter—Copyright) NUKUALOFA, April 5. A team of American doctors is preparing to vaccinate every islander in Tonga against smallpox with a revolutionary jet injection gun which treats 1000 people an hour. The six doctors, led by Ronald Roberto, of the United States Public Services Communicable Disease Centre, Atlanta, are using Tonga as an experimental ground. The new jet gun, which is operated by the foot, will allow the mass vaccination to be carried out in the quickest possible form. The jet gun forces vaccine through a one five-thousandth inch orifice at a pressure of 12001 b a square inch. Dr. Roberto said the gun is usable for any bacterial vaccine and is faster and more economical than any other method. He expects to treat the entire population over the next two months and then move on to another field. Dr. Roberto said Tonga had been chosen because it had the largest percentage of susceptibles and at the invitation of Prince Tungi.
