New Approach Sought In Woodward Cup Golf
A plea for greater emphasis to be placed on performance in determining the composition of the Woodward Cup competition was made by Mr A. ’V. Barley (Russley) at the annual meeting of. the Canterbury Provincial Golf Association.
Mr Barley moved a recommendation to the association’s match committee that when teams were being allocated to the Woodward, Blank, and Simon Cup contests, competition . results from the previous season as well as handicaps should be taken into account, providing the composition of the teams was virtually unaltered. Mr Parley said he understood that the Russley B team had lost its place in the Woodward Cup competition because the players’ handicap aggregate was greater. than that of Christchurch B. But, he said, the Woodward Cup was -for match play, and Russley B had finished about half-way down the list last season. “If results don’t count for anything, then why not add up handicaps at the start of the season and announce the winner,” he said.
