U.K. Pay Up Again {N.Z. Press Association) DUNEDIN, Abril 2. New Zealand Universities would now be in a much more difficult position as a result of a 20 per cent salary increase for university staff in Britain, the Vice-Chancellor of the University, of Otago, Dr. Arthur Beacham, said today. The British increase, which took effect yesterday, was the second increase within a year. “University salaries in' New Zealand have not been- competitive with those in Britain or in Australia for a long time,” said Dr. Beacham. ’. Before Britain's latest increase, the average salary for a professor was £3500 compared with the existing • professional salary in New Zealand of £2BOO. The new recommendation gave a professor in Britain a Salary between £3400' aiid £4750, with an average of £4200.
