RACING On Purpose, Bandon May Be Best In Rich Sponsored Race
The combined efforts of On Purpose and Bandon could make the George Adams Handicap safe for the North Island at Riccarton on Monday. '. z
This £3600 sponsored race is the first leg of the TAR double on the first day of the Canterbury Jockey Club’s autumn meeting.
On Purpose has 8.4 and is 111 b below Bandon, which is second top weight now that Gay Filou is out of the field. The record book does not suggest that Bandon is 1 lib better than the Waikato mare.
When they met in the Wellington Racing Club Handicap over a mile and a half at Trentham in January, Bandon, with 8-L beat On Purpose (8-5) by a long neck. On the same course five days earlier, On Purpose was first with 7-10 and Bandon fifth with 8-2 in the Summer Handicap.
Bandon and On Purpose met azam in the President s Handicap at Trentham a fortnight ago. Bandon won it with 8-10 j and On Purpose was fourth under 8-6.
The South Island stayers in the George Adams Handicap are a pretty even lot on their latest form.
Great Sensation, at top form, would have been a force with 9-7, but he is 11, and his summer racing showed that age had dimmed some of his brilliance.
Champ, winner cd five of his last six races, will be a solidlyhacked light-weight in the Great Easter Handicap, second leg of Monday’s double. His record in open class Ist two wins from three starts. He has gained full marks for versatility; one of those wins was at a mile and a quarter and the other was at six furlongs. Vitamise. winner of the Great Easter last year, and the Wingatui-trained Rondabelle, may be the pick of Champ s rivals. A J. Stokes, who rides Champ, is pretty certain to meet with earlier success on the programme. He will nde Shipmate in the Champagne Stakes, and tins brilliant two-year-oid looks the best winning prospect on the programme.
