NEW MOTOR FACTORY
No Decision On Site
(N.Z. Press Association)
WELLINGTON, Mar. 27.
The managing-director of General Motors (New Zealand), Ltd. (Mr I. C. Chew), said yesterday that the company is considering a change of venue from Upper Hutt for its new large assembly plant. But he made it clear that no decision has been made, and that whatever the decision, the company expects to continue operations in Petone and Upper Hutt for many years.
“No pressure whatsoever from any source has been placed on General Motors to move in any direction,” said Mr Chew. “We are considering a change of venue because our current appreciation of the long-term prospects of our business in the Dominion indicates that our present properties in Petone and Upper Hutt would be inadequate. “We have been offered a great number of sites, seven of which are in the Hutt Valley, and while it is possible we might decide to build elsewhere, no decision has been made and none is likely for some little time.”
