WONGALA RETURNS
Towed Into Nelson
(N.Z. Press Association)
NELSON, March 27.
The disabled explosives ship Wongala ended her voyage of three days and a half back to Nelson, under tow, shortly after 10 a.m. today. Boisterous south-westerly weather and the condition of the Wongala’s engine made the assistance of the Nelson Harbour Board’s tug Wakatu necessary.
The tug began the tow 11 miles out of port about 9 a.m. Engineers of the Anchor Shipping Company’s foundry boarded the Wongala as she came alongside and repairs on the broken scavenger pump system began immediately. The Scottish manufacturer of the Wongala’s engines had informed the owners, the Tucker Shipping Company, that no replacement could be supplied. The 452-ton auxiliary schooner was more than 200 miles out in the Tasman Sea on a voyage to Melbourne when she had to put back to Nelson on Monday night.
