FRESH FISH AT KAIAPOI
Sales Direct From Toa
Large crowds awaited the arrival of the Toa at Kaiapoi on Wednesday afternoon to buy fresh fish at the wharf. The Toa, commanded by Captain C. M. Anderson, brought a catch of four tons of fish valued at £6OO.
Between 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. on Wednesday and 9 a.m. to noon on Thursday there was a steady sale of blue cod, groper and trumpeter. At midday on Thursday one ton and a half of fish had been sold direct to the public.
The Toa has been chartered by Kaiapoi Fisheries, Ltd., from the Kaiapoi Shipping Company, Ltd. The fish are caught on the Mernoo bank, about 120 miles east of Kaiapoi and 16 hours’ steaming time out.
A stay of four to five days on the ground is necessary to make line fishing economic. The Toa, previously used for cargo carrying, has been fitted out to meet the fishing trade.
