Best Courses Needed For Woodward Cup

rpHERE are few more atx tractive golf courses in Christchurch than Waimairi Beach, but even its Oldest Members would probably agree that it is not at present a championship course. To the average golfer, perhaps, the narrow fairways make Waimairi a difficult course, and even the better players have to place their shots well if they are to score satisfactorily. But the course lacks length, five of the 12 par-4 holes being under 360 yards and only one of the par-s’s exceeding 440 yards. On Sunday, when interclub Woodward Cup matches were played there, the course was showing the effects of the dry weather, and it was not uncommon for players to be penalised for playing good shots by being left on the small sandy wastes on some qf the fairways. The Freyberg Rose Bowl competition is not now far off, and the Canterbury

Provincial Golf Association would have, done Its top players a service had it been decided to play Woodward Cup matches only on the more testing courses— Shirley, Russley, Templeton and perhaps Waitikiri. It is always difficult to find sufficient nard match practice for players who are Freyberg Rose Bowl candidates. At least they should play as regularly as possible on the courses most likely to improve them, and to assist the selectors.
