New Trawler Joins The Fleet

Another new trawler

has joined Lyttelton’s

fishing fleet. She is Antares, built and designed by C. R. Carey, of Picton, to the order of United Fisheries, Christchurch.

The kauri-hulled Antares is a similar vessel to the Lyttelton trawler, John Dory, also designed by C. R. Carey, but the latter is a Lyttelton product from Sinclair Melbourne’s boatyard. The picture shows three of the delivery crew of the Antares on the foredeck. From left they are Messrs Carey, D. Osborne and D. C. Fitzgerald. Lyttelton now has three new, deep-sea trawlers in its fishing fleet with the arrival of the Antares from Picton early yesterday morning. They are.the Miss Sno-Lyne, built in Napier, and the John Dory and Antares. For the 185 miles Picton to Lyttelton t-’p, the Antares was manned by a crew of five. She left Picton at 5.20 a.m. on Monday and arrived at Lyttelton at 4 a.m. yesterday. The Antares averaged about 81 knots on the trip south, her normal cruising speed. The master was Mr Fitzgerald, of Lyttelton, and the rest of the crew comprised Messrs Carey, of Picton, A. Pentecost an apprentice boat builder at Carey’s Picton boatyard, J. Cook, a Picton electrician, and Osborne, of Lyttelton.

The overall length of the Antares is 51ft. She has a beam of 14ft 3in and a draft of 7ft. She has a kauri hull

with hardwood frames, stem, floors and other members. She has miro deck planking. There are two 30ft Oregon pine masts. Construction of the Antares took about a year. A 600 gallon fuel tank will permit the Antares to cruise a considerable distance without refuelling. The fresh water capacity 100 gallons and

her refrigerated cargo capacity is 10 tons. For propulsion, the Antares has a diesel engine. Sleeping accommodation is provided for three, but she will be manned normally by a crew of two. She is equipped with radio telephone and ■ echo sounder, besides the normal requirements for safe naviga-

- tion and handling. The Antares will go into ; service after Easter but before [ sh? does this, a blessing cereI mony will be held as ■is the usual custom, par- ' ticularly in Mediterranean : countries. Lyttelton’s two i other new trawlers held similar ceremonies last year be- ■ fore entering service.
