TOWN HALL
Riccarton Will Pay Dissatisfaction and concern at the latest developments in Christchurch’s town hall project were expressed by Cr. G. A. Franks at a meeting of the Riccarton Borough Council last evening. “I am not at all satisfied—especially with the latest information we received about the cost,” said Cr. Franks. “I am also somewhat concerned at the number of local bodies that are pulling out.
“Christchurch should have a town hall but 1 do not think Riccarton should pay more than its share for the privilege,” he said. Cr. Franks said he wished to have recorded his vote against a recommendation by the finance and by-laws committee that the council approve of the programme for an architectural competition and reaffirmed its earlier decision that it was prepared to contribute a “fair and equitable proportior. of the cost” of the town hall. The recommendation was approved.
The Mayor (Mr E. J. Bradshaw) said he was delighted with the decision. “1 feel we will pay the proper share for a proper town hall,” he said. “1 hope other local bodies will reconsider their stands and come in with their support.”
