Casper Beats Nicklaus By Stroke In Final

MIAMI (Florida), March 22. Billy Casper today shot a two-under-par 70 for a 277 to snatch a one-stroke victory over Jack Nicklaus in the 50,000-dollar Doral Invitation golf tournament, United Press International reported. Casper, aged 32, the 1959 United States Open champion, started the round today with a two-stroke lead over Nicklaus who clinched second place with a 69, for a total of 278.
Rex Baxter came in third with a 71 for 279, two strokes
ahead of Sammy Snead whose 71 tied him on 281 for fourth place with Jack Rule, who shot a 72 today. Arnold Palmer, still seeking his first victory since October, finished with a two-under-par 70 for a one-under-par 287. Gary Player had a 71 which tied him at 285 with Lionel Herbert and Joe Lopez, while Julius Boros closed with a 69 for a 287 which matched Palmer. New Zealand’s Bob Charles was eliminated at the end of Friday’s second round.
