HOW LONG IS AN ELASTIC PIECE?
LONDON. The British Customs and Excise department has a puzzle: “How long is a piece of elastic?” The influx to the market of trousers, socks, underwear and other items of stretch fabrics, which fit several sizes has complicated the calculation of purchase tax.
Sold as children’s clothing, these items are free of purchase tax. But many adults are buying “stretch” clothes in junior departments.—Reuter.
