GRAND PRIX AT SEBRING
Ferraris Fill First Places (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) SEBRING (Florida), March 22. A new Ferrari racing team of Jf- Parkes (England) and U. Magholi (Italy) won the Sebring 12-hour Grand Prix of enduance yesterday. Unofficially they drove a record distance in spite of a flaming collision of two other cars less than an hour before the end which brought out the yellow caution flag.
Ferraris finished in the first three places. All three were 12-cylinder prototype cars. American Ford Cobra production models filled the next three places, even though one of the Cobras was in the spectacular wreck. The average speed of the winner was about 92 m.p.h., bettering the old record of 90.7 m.p.h. Parkes and Maglloli were working together for the first time. Well Ahead Parkes flashed across the line well ahead of the Italian team of L. Scaflotti and N. Vaccarella, both of Milan. The defending champion, J. Surtees, of England, teamed with L. Bandini, of Italy, was third. Parkes and Maglloli, who escaped the mechanical trouble that plagued some of the other 12-cylinder rear-engine prototype Ferraris, finished almost five laps ahead of the nearest of the new Cobras, which had challenged the foreign cars during much of the race. Less than an hour before the finish a spectacular wreck in front of the main grandstand eliminated the Cobra team of D. Gurney and R. Johnson, and sent Johnson to a hospital.
