MIGRATION TO N.Z.

Govt. Policy Defended

(N Z. Press Association)

HAMILTON, March 23.

Criticism that the Government's immigration policy was not strong enough to overcome labour shortages in New Zealand had no foundation, Mr J. S. Meadowcroft, the Dominion president of the National Party, said in Hamilton. “I have heard it stated on a number of occasions that last year 4500 immigrants entered New Zealand,” he said.

“This is entirely wrong. It refers only to assisted immigrants. The total number was actually 32,589. We expect that next year the number will be stepped up to over 40,000.”
