“Cold” Englishmen

Sir, —As an Englishwoman I appreciate “Kiwi’s” spirited defence of our joint British heritage. But some credence must be given to Madame Biardeau-Beraud’s assertion by the cri de coeur of an Englishman in Paris when approached by a charming Parisienne: “Please go away, little lady, I’m in arrears at home!” Actually, considering their countries’ contiguity, it is surprising that the English and French should continue to generalise so vaguely about each other’s habits and outlook; and with a few notable exceptions they speak each other’s language abominably. However, a reluctant measure of mutual admiration does exist, for the French cuisine is fully appreciated by British palates, while in a French tailor’s shop a gent’s very natty suiting was displayed with the proud caption, “Tres snob.” Vive I’Entente Cordiale, after all.—Yours, etc., BOADICEA. March 21,1964.
