Cassius X “The Hated”
(HZ. Press Assn.—Copyright) SEATTLE, March 20.
The former world heavy-weight champion, Joe Louis, said in Seattle that Cassius Clay might be the first title-holder in boxing history to earn public hatred rather than respect. United Press International reported today.
Louis said there was no doubt but that Clay had hurt the cause of the American Negro by his membership of the Black Muslims, an anti-white sect
“The things they preach are just the opposite to what we be-
iieve,” Louis told reporters. “The heavy-weight champion should be the champion of all the people. He has responsibilities to all the people.” Louis said Sonny Liston, from whom Clay won the title, made some mistakes, but that he did not think the American public felt hatred for Liston while he was champion. “The American way is to give a man another chance.” said Louis. He thought Liston had made a start towards becoming a good champion when he lost his title to Clay.
