Mclntyre Best Athlete At Boys’ High Sports
The all-round excellence of the Canterbury Junior athletic representative, A. J. Mclntyre, in the field events of the Christchurch Boys’ High School sports recently gave him a total of points in those events greater than any other senior athlete managed in the whole grade. Mclntyre won the shot put and discus, was second in the high jump, triple jump and pole vault, and was third in the javelin. A. W. Tweedie, by winning the two sprints, won the sprint championship, and G. Panckhurst, winner of the half-mile and one-mile, won the distance championship. However, M. O'Callaghan, with six placings all told, had a total of 18 points and was the only competitor to challenge Mclntyre. In blustery conditions, only two records were broken. In the junior discus, P. J. Thomas bettered the previous best performance by almost 10 feet and Mclntyre’s 161 ft 55in for the open discus was 24ft 6sin better than T. E. Freeman's old mark.
The dominant athlete over the whole day was L. W. Jones, who won the intermediate championship with plenty to spare. He won three of the field events and the 120 yards hurdles, was second in each of the two short sprints, and picked up a couple of thirds to reach a personal tally of 28 points. Champions were:
