PERMITS FOR D.D.T.
More Than 200 Issued More than 200 permits for well over 1000 tons of D.D.T. superphosphate had been issued by the Department of Agriculture, said the farm advisory officer with the department in Ashburton (Mr C. C. P. Whatman) Much of this had been sown on to new grass, a practice of which the department did not completely approve, he said. Now that there had been a bit of rain, farmers should watch for porina damage, he said. If a pasture was not recovering as well as would be expected, damage from this pest should be suspected. “There were big flights of porina last spring so we can expect them,” he said. More Durable The classical figure of Icarus falling from the sky which decorates the Brevet Club Memorial Centre in Memorial avenue is considered to have a less dating affect than a statue of a World War II airman in flying kit. According to the club president (Mr J. A. Stanley) it was originally intended to have the figure of an airman centred in a small pool. “At the time this idea was popular,” he said. “A mould was made by the sculptor who was doing the job, but I believe it got damaged. The classical figure of Icarus is not expected to date over the years,” he said.
