Rates
Sir,—Mr Alien’s suggestion to reduce the bank overdraft is a brilliant one, but he does not realise that not everyone has £5O when the rate demand is received under the present system. Many people do extra work to pay their rates; others do put aside so much each week. What does make the pill hard to swallow is: why is there still this problem of collecting and paying rates? A Royal Commission has suggested collecting 2d in the £l, and this is the most sensible and agreeable way of sharing the burden. No-one could grumble at 6s 8d being taken from their pay packet each week if everyone was paying the same amount. —Yours, etc., L. LESLIE. March 12, 1964.
