LEAVING I.L.O.
S.A. Makes Decision (N.Z.P.A .-Reuter—Copyright) CAPE TOWN, March 11. Tire South African Government had decided to withdraw from the International Labour Organisation, the Minister of Labour, Mr A. E. Trollip, announced in the House of Assembly today. The Minister said the Government had been influenced in reaching this decision by an “accumulation of hostile acts” against South Africa. The governing body of the 1.L.0. voted on February 15 in Geneva in favour of suspending South Africa from participation in its annual general conferences. The vote, which was 32 in favour, 14 against and two abstentions, was on a recommendation that the 1.L.0.’s constitution be amended so that any member State found by the United Nations to be “flagrantly and persistently pursuing by its legislation a declared policy of racial discrimination such as apartheid” be suspended for the conference. Mr Trollip also cited as recent acts against the Republic, the invalidation of credentials Of the South African workers’ delegate at the 1963 conference, and the action of the governing body in June, 1963, on the initiative and insistence of its directorgeneral, to exclude South Africa from membership of certain committees. South Africa was one of the founder members when the organisation was established in 1919. Wool In Demand.—Competition was generally strong in a wool sale conducted by the Geelong Woolbrokers’ Association and in a sale in Sydney yesterday. Some values dropped in the Geelong sale but, prices remained unchanged for the main part in Sydney.
